Did you know that Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was the game that started the whole Mario & Luigi RPG series of games that is still going to this day? While games like Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario may have started Mario on the RPG path. It is this series that most people think of. While this was remade for the Nintendo 3DS. I am actually taking a look at the original Game Boy Advance version which was released all the way back in 2003.
The Beanbean Kingdom
Like most other Mario games, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga does, in fact, start off in the Mushroom Kingdom. It does not take long for things to go wrong and the famous plumbers once again need to come to the aid of Princess Peach. Not to just rescue her from Bowser this time though!
You see, this game has a new antagonist in the form of Cackletta who is from the Beanbean Kingdom and steals the voice of Princess Peach. Mario & Luigi must head there to get it back. Of course, as this is an RPG there is more to the story than that, but I do not want to spoil it for you. Setting the game in a different kingdom was a great idea as it gives the game a different identity to what came before it. The story is hilarious and very well written. If you are a Nintendo fan, you will get a real kick out of some of the references the game makes.

Its later build date as well as research into the ROM suggest that the game itself had been finished at that point in time and the Demo is merely a stripped-down version of the international release.

- ROM overview Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is an RPG for the Game Boy Advance featuring the famous brothers in an adventure to save both the Mushroom and Beanbean Kingdoms. The game is well-known for its comedy and colorful graphics.
Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga is a Gameboy Advance emulator game that you can download to your computer or play online within your browser. You can also download free ROMs such as Super Mario Advance 4 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (V1.1), Mario And Luigi Superstar Saga (Menace) and Super Mario Advance 2 - Super Mario World as shown below.
A For Mario B For Luigi!
The gameplay of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is very interesting and something that we take for granted today. However, back in 2003, the fact that you controlled both brothers at the same time was unique. A will make Mario jump and B will make Luigi jump it is pretty interesting and a fun way to move around the map. You can do team-up moves such as Luigi hitting Mario with a hammer to make him smaller and Mario jumping off Luigiās shoulders.
The game has many great puzzles that you need to figure out and using the brothers to work together has always been an aspect of the series that I have really enjoyed.
Get Ready For Combat
There are no random battles in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Instead, you can clearly see enemies in the world so you can ignore them if you want. I would not advise this as you will need to make sure you are leveling up as you play. You can jump on an enemy and it will give you a small advantage going into battle. Mario & Luigi have plenty of moves they can do in battle and the battles are actually a lot of fun.One of the things I like about the battles is that you can interact with what is going on. While you need to select your attacks. Some attacks allow you to press a button at a certain type to actually pull it off or get some kind of bonus attack points. The combat is very easy to figure out, but later fights will require you to really think about what you are doing.
Bright & Colorful
The presentation of the game is just awesome. I like how the Mushroom Kingdom looks, but it is really the Beanbean Kingdom that steals the show. It is very interesting in its design and I do like what they have done. Of course, the remake for the 3DS looks better, but this game is still no slouch in the looks department.
For the first game in the series, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga really did a great job of laying the groundwork for what would come. This is a very fun action RPG that is easy to get into, but it does have some tricky sections that will test your skills. I love the story and think that it is one of the most charming the series has ever seen.
8/10
Pros:
- I love the story and the setting of the game
- Combat is fun and more in-depth than you would think
- I like the controls when you are walking around the world
- The game is very easy on the eyes
- It is what started it all!
Cons:
- It is a tad on the easy side
- The Nintendo 3DS remake I must admit is the best way to play this game
Overall rating: 8

< Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
This is a sub-page of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
A North American kiosk demo of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga that could be played in local stores prior to the game's release. Research into the ROM (namely the discovery of the build date) reveals that the game itself had been finished at that point in time, and that this demo is merely a stripped-down version of the international release. While all the audio tracks, items, bros. attacks, overworld moves and event pointers seem to be available, most of the sprites, enemy data, room data and even minigames are missing.
- 1General Differences
General Differences
Title Screen
When waiting long enough at the title screen the intro cutscene will start. Aside from this Demo, this feature is only present in the Japanese release.
Mario Bros.
Both brothers start out at Level 1, their Stache and Speed stats are kept the same but BP uses the Japanese release's starting values (14 for Mario and 16 for Luigi). The HP, Pow and Def stats got boosted.
Stat | Demo | Release |
---|---|---|
HP | 2024 | 1012 |
BP | 1416 | 1010 (English), 1416 (Japan) |
Pow | 1412 | 1211 |
Def | 1314 | 99 |
Speed | 139 | 139 |
Stache | 65 | 65 |
It's also worth noting that not only were some stats increased, but after battles your health will always be fully replenished. If the player ever receives a game over then the game will fade into the title screen, as opposed to the Game Over screen.
As for the inventory the only options you can choose are Items and Stats. Equipment is absent, and the map is not given to you, thus it is absent as well. You can edit memory to set the map flag, but it will only show up as a black screen in your inventory.
The player also starts out with 200 coins, 10 Mushrooms, 5 Syrups and 3 1-Up Mushrooms, once again to make the demo easier.
Stardust Fields
Final | Demo |
---|
When pressing Start on the title screen, the game sends you straight to Stardust Fields, skipping the starting part of the game set in the Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Cruiser. The layout of Stardust Fields has also been changed, with rooms connecting to each other differently, and some being completely omitted.
The rope jumping minigame was replaced by the battle tutorial that would take place in the Koopa Cruiser in the final game, except here it's got its own unique battle background which isn't in the final game. Going back into the aforementioned room once the tutorial is finished isn't possible, as you automatically appear on the other side of the building. The Save Album and Green pipe are also missing, but three Fighter Fly enemies have been added in the cave between Stardust Fields and Hoohoo Village, which is enemy-free in the retail version.
The side quest where the Bros. have to look for 100 coins for Tolstar was also removed, and despite the game giving you 200 coins in the beginning your money actually isn't of any consequence whatsoever as he battles you soon after you gave him all your coins.
Hoohoo Village
Final | Demo |
---|
The village has been slightly changed, similarly to Stardust Fields. Some rooms are omitted and a cave entrance has been removed. The rock that Fawful places to stop you will already be there and the bridge will already be fixed. Fawful himself, as well as Sledge and Mallet will be absent.
Thanks For Playing Screen
Not too far into Hoohoo Mountain, after the room with the first whirlwind, you're presented with this screen thanking you for playing this demo. One of the debug rooms (the one at room ID 8) in the final game was replaced to make space for it.
Miscellaneous
It's worth noting that while this demo seems to borrow from the Japanese version (namely the starting stats and the title screen intro cutscene) it lacks the Japanese-exclusive Fire Dash glitch. The 'Highjump on Small Mario' money trick converts 1 of Luigi's HP into 1 coin like in the international release, as opposed to the 2 HP into 1 coin on the Japanese release.
As for inaccessible content, the following screens can be triggered by memory editing:
- Buy Items
- Buy Pants & Badges
- Sell Items
- Staff Credits
- Inventory Cutscene (Koopa Photographer)
- Save Screen
Modding in a Save Album and attempting to save the game runs the saving procedure as expected. But it seems to be glitched, as the game will write over the same few bytes over and over. Not to mention, the Load Save and Game Over screens seems to be absent, so you cannot load saves anyway.
Super Mario Bros Us Rom
The Staff Credits are missing the background graphics, but all the sprites and text are present. Aside from that there are no differences compared to the release version.
